| Note on Indigo’s name:
When we picked this dog off the street she was so undernourished and neglected we immediately took her to the vet. The vet wanted a name and Maria tagged her Indigo, the name seemingly coming from nowhere. I had called her “Old Blue”, but wasn’t really going to make Indigo have to live with that, so maybe Indigo came from the color Indigo Blue, but who knows. Jane was added to make her more fem or something like that.
Indigo Jane was well known in a neighborhood about a mile or so from where we live as a ragged, skinny, homeless dog. When a neighbor told us about her (he had rental property in Indigo Jane’s homeless home area) he said he would rather see her put to sleep that starve or freeze, we went to find her and it didn’t take long.
Whatever kind of abuse this poor starving dog had survived it did not dampen her love for people one bit. After a bowl of food and some water she jumped right in the car, wagging her tail and wanting to sit in my lap. When I got her home she jumped right into Maria’s arms and was so excited to have any attention I knew she was a special dog.
Indigo is full of life and loves everyone and everything. She will play with sticks, branches, dirt clods, dogs, cats, birds, actually she more or less just chases the birds. Indigo loves to chew on her toys and her favorite thing is to get a hole in her toy so she can tear the stuffing out. We always keep chew toys on hand so when we need a rest from her endless attention, we just toss her one and it keeps her occupied for hours. She was a great help when I was digging fence postholes, and even dug a few I didn’t need.
Indigo Jane is always so excited to have someone to play with she tends to jump up and wants to chew on you a little too much. She has had no training but is very smart and catching on to what is right and wrong. She is 12 to 18 months old and has all the puppy enthusiasm for life that is so wonderful in dogs. She is such a happy dog it is hard to believe she went through the winter lonely, hungry and cold.
Indigo Jane lives with more than a dozen cats, and an old grumpy dog. She gets along with everyone, but doesn’t know her own strength and often wears out whomever she is playing with. She has more energy than the rest of the crew and eventually the cats will jump up on something out of her reach and the old dog goes out when she is in, and comes in when she is out, but they are not afraid of her. She should do well with any other animals as well as kids.
Indigo Jane needs some more training, but has no real issues. The vet said she was surprisingly healthy, just skinny. She is just a beautiful enthusiastic puppy that wants someone to love and someone to love her. Nothing has broken her spirit in spite of what she has gone through and that says a lot. I know there is a home for her somewhere, and it will be great for her and whoever gets her. |
